I'm from NZ and I've been in aussie coming up 3 years... I've lived in Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Sydney.

Melbourne is a very cool place, plenty of art and music and good people, public transport is excellent and inexpensive, the weather is shite though. I stayed there 6 months and had an awesome time, work is easy to find too.

Gold Coast - the weather is awesome and the Ocean is amazing... totally ruined by all the superficial people, shopping malls and glamour. maybe you like that sort of thing but not for me.

Sydney has everything you could possibly want, and heaps that you don't want. I've been to many cities, and Sydney has to have the worst public transport I've come across, and its expensive. the weather is ok but it rains alot. there are some really cool artistic/musical parts, and suburbs like Newtown and Glebe have great bars and cafe's. Sydney has lots of rushed and money-hungry people.

Overall I'd vote for Melbourne.

Depends what you're looking for. Melbourne has a cooler climate, but a vibrant music and arts scene.  Sydney has fairly moderate temperatures, but is the centre of commerce, business and trade for Australia. Brisbane has much warmer temperatures and has a much more relaxed feel to it.

Perth and Adelaide are very small cities comparatively.
