The chairman of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tom-c35214 Werner wants to the see the Reds reclaim their prominence of being one of the top teams in Europe, and was optimistic about achieving their targets in the coming years.
Having won the English league title on 18 occasions and also claimed 5 European Cup accolades, the current state of affairs at Liverpool present a totally different picture altogether.
Their dismal eighth place finish last season meant that they failed to grab a berth in Champions League football for the third year in the running.
Their poor showing forced the owners into taking major decisions. They fired their former director of football, Damien Comolli and manager, Kenny Dalglish from their respective posts.
Brendan Rodgers was brought in place of the Kop legend, as the Reds set him the prime target of restoring Champions League football at Anfield.
With all the changes in personnel and the set-up being made, Werner was confident that they will prove to be for the betterment of the club. He revealed that he recently attended a conference of the top European clubs in Warsaw, along with owner John Henry,
and got a lot of ideas as to how to get their team out of their current slump.
While talking to reporters, he said: “Do we feel that it is possible to get on a level with those clubs? Absolutely. Can we close that gap and compete at the very highest level? Absolutely.”
However, the 62-year old admitted that they were currently lagging behind the top European teams by a hefty margin. He felt that there was a lot of hard work to be done in order for them to compete with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604, Manchester United and Real
Madrid, but expressed his respect towards them over what they had achieved over the last couple of years.
“We know that we are behind, but we are on it. We have a lot of respect, not just for Manchester United, but other clubs in the Premier League, as well as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich… For us, we feel that we have work to do.”
