Wesley Caulkett beats Lino Munoz in Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Australia’s Wesley Caulkett advanced into the second round of the Men’s Singles draw as he defeated Lino Munoz of Mexico in the first round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Canada, on Wednesday, July 20.
The encounter was one of the best matches of the day, as both shuttlers played top-quality badminton throughout the battle. The Australian emerged as the winner in the end, where Caulkett worked superbly and won the three-set fight in 46 minutes.
The first game progressed without giving a clear advantage to anyone, as both shuttlers remained close until the 60-second break. At the interval, the Australian was two-points behind at 9-11. The Mexican played well in the set without making much mistakes
against the Australian, who was not playing that well in the match and lost the game with a margin of 18-21, in 15 minutes.
The following game of the match was also entertaining, where both shuttlers again remained toe-to-toe until the end of the opening half, where the Australian was leading the set with a margin of 11-9. After the break, he continued his better run in the second
game and was successful in clinching the set by a decent score of 21-18, in 15 minutes.
The third set of this wonderful Men’s Singles fight was entertaining for the big crowd, as both players displayed all their skills to dominate the game. However, the score remained close until the concluding part of the second game.
At this crucial stage in the final set, Caulkett proved his worth by playing some perfect down the line strokes, which earned him precious points and he won the set in 16 minutes with a margin of 21-19. The three-set match ended in 46 minutes with a 18-21,
21-18 and 21-19 score on the board.
In the Men’s Singles second round, Caulkett will be up against China’s Tian Houwei, who thrashed Phillipe Charron of Canada in a straight-set match of the event.
