Wesley Johnson hoping for a fresh start with Phoenix Suns – NBA Update
Wesley Johnson was the fourth draft pick in 2010, but after two disappointing years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he is now with the Phoenix Suns. And the 25 year old is ready to take a fresh start.
He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves over other promising talents like Greg Monroe, Pau George and DeMarcus Cousins. But so far in his NBA career, Wesley has filled to live up to his potential and hopes things could change
with the Suns.
“It was kind of rough,” Johnson said. “Really I learned a lot from it. It’s a new beginning. I can erase all that and start over.”
“I tried to make it work, but they had different roles they wanted me to do and wanted me to fit, and it wasn’t working out.”
Wesley’s performances failed to live up to his bidding as he averaged only 9 points per game in his first season. At that time, the pressure of being a rookie in NBA was understood to have gotten to the small forward but a disappointing
sophomore year was just a bit too much for The Wolves. Wesley numbers further went down last season to only 6 points per game.
Now with his arrival in Phoenix Wesley believes the pressure is off his shoulders and he is rearing to bring out his best.
Wesley took a similar kind of road back in the college days when he transferred to Syracuse after spending two disappointing seasons with Iowa State. He averaged 12.3 and 12.4 points in his two years in Iowa but after the shift,
the forward averaged 16.5 points.
He is hoping that a similar fate comes his way in NBA as well.
“I think with the blank slate is just me coming fresh, it’s repeating itself like with me from Iowa State dealing with the stuff and then coming to Syracuse,”
The young forward will not be the only one new to the Suns this season. The desert city franchise has acquired some new faces in the form of Luis Scola and former Suns PG Goran Dragic, and it might help Johnson to develop chemistry
with the new teammates as he plays, rather than trying to settle in an already established system.
