West Bromwich Albion head coach, Steve Clarke, was extremely disappointed with his side’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, December 29.
The 49-year-old tactician admitted that his side did not deserve to walk away with a win, but insisted that the Red Devils did not deserve to claim all three points as well.
“I think the 2-0 score-line puts a gloss on it that probably Manchester United doesn’t deserve. I’m not going to say we deserved to win the game but I think if we’d come away from here with a draw nobody could have complained. I think they were agitated
because they knew the Albion had control of the game”, Clarke was quoted as saying to the media in the post-match press conference.
United commenced proceedings brightly, and grabbed the lead within the opening nine minutes of action through a fortunate Gareth McAuley own goal.
The Baggies pressed hard in search of the equaliser in the remaining action of the opening 45 minutes, but failed to threaten the Red Devils’ back-line.
After the break, the home side continued to stage a dazzling show, but failed to put the match to bed until Robin van Persie’s stunner at the stroke of full time whistle.
And the Scottish mentor admitted that his side tried their level best to score the equaliser, but they lacked incisiveness in front of goal.
“We went a little bit more direct in the second half and once we got it into their half we got it down and we tried to create chances that would have got us the goal that would have got us a deserved point”, Clarke concluded.
West Bromwich Albion remains unmoved at the seventh spot on the Premier League table following the loss, a mammoth 16 points behind the table-toppers, Manchester United.
They will lock horns against Fulham in their next league game at home on Tuesday, January 1.
