West Brom hosted Liverpool again in the Capital One Cup last night, with many expecting a repeat of the 3-0 Premier League victory.
West Brom took the lead through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gabriel-Tamas-c14343 after Liverpool goalkeeper Bradley Jones made a mess of things in the box.
The host enjoyed a brilliant start and dominated, but were quickly rocked by a Liverpool equaliser. Real Madrid’s on-loan starlet http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nuri-Sahin-c28251 scored a 27-yard screamer, which could have been saved had it not been for Ben Foster’s uncharacteristic mistake.
The in-form keeper let the driven shot crawl underneath him and cross the line. The Baggies were shell shocked, but no one more than manager Steve Clarke.
This was the first goal Foster had conceded at the Hawthorns in over 7 games, and the goalkeeper let in another as Sahin made it 1-2 to the visitors in the dying minutes.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke expressed his surprise at having lost the game, but insisted that he was not worried by Foster’s error.
“We said we’d have a go and we certainly started that way,” said Clarke. “I think their goal sort of knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit. “
“I don’t know why. Maybe it was because it was such a soft goal to lose. After it became 1-1, they were better, passed it better, and we sat off them too much.”
“The second half was much better, we got about them and pressed to make a game of it. The second half could have gone either way.”
The boss rued the late goal scored by Liverpool, and said that by that time it was too late to salvage anything from the game. He however is not concerned by Foster’s slip up, and has backed him to recover and get a clean sheet in the next game.
