West Bromwich Albion will appeal Pablo Ibanez dismissal
West Bromwich Albion are set to appeal the red card given to Pablo Ibanez on Monday, 1 November.
Referee Michael Oliver sent Ibanez off for a professional foul on Blackpool’s DJ Campbell in West Brom’s 2-1 defeat in the Premier League.
Oliver awarded a penalty in the incident and dismissed Ibanez as he judged the Spanish player to be the last man in the defence, despite the West Brom defenders claiming that they had a number of players that would have covered Campbell making a shot on
goal.
The foul looked very harsh on Ibanez who appeared to have made very little contact with the Blackpool forward for him to go to ground, but the referee was in a good position to see the foul.
West Brom issued a club statement that said, "The club believe, having viewed various TV angles, Ibanez was wrongfully dismissed."
The Baggies must lodge their appeal by Wednesday, 2 November or Ibanez will be banned for the team’s home Premier League fixture with Manchester City on Sunday, 7 November.
West Brom feel aggrieved that the sending off had a huge bearing on the outcome of the match, since the incident occurred in the 10th minute.
Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam scored the resulting penalty. As a result, West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo was forced to change his line up drastically and replace the lively Simon Cox up front with former Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid.
The second red card in the first half made matters worse for the Baggies who were all ready facing a difficult task and chasing the game.
Di Matteo could not complain with Oliver’s decision this time, as he sent off Gonzalo Jara for dangerous play after the defender lunged wildly at Blackpool’s Luke Varney
The club have decided not to appeal against Jara’s dismissal, but they will wait anxiously on a decision on Ibanez, whose sending off was unjustified according to West Brom.
