I make that commute to the shimla area many times in the year from delhi and the best way to get there is to take the shatabdi morning train from delhi station to chandigarh. As per the type of vehicle i would reccomend the toyota innova with diesel engine for the 3 hr drive for 6 people to shimla. Almost every taxi service carries that vehivle now and its basically like any mini van u'd see in the states. I wouldn't bother with a qualis or a heavy duty off roader for the journey because u will be travelling on the highway the military uses to access the himalays so its one of the best kept road i have seen even after living in the US, so i would aim for comfort when choosing a vehicle
