West Ham United manager Avram Grant has lavished praise on Jonathan Spector, who put on a heroic performance against his former side, Manchester United in the Carling Cup.
West Ham thrashed United 4-0 at Upton Park on Wednesday night to qualify for the semi-finals of the League Cup. Spector was the inspirational figure for The Hammers, when he bagged a brace in the first-half, to give the home side a two goal advantage.
Any hope of a United comeback died when Carlton Cole struck twice after the interval to make the final score line 4-0.West Ham’s manager, Avram Grant seemed impressed by the American’s high-spirited display on the night.
Spector was playing in the centre of the park as contrast to his usual defensive role and the tactical move proved to be a smart one. Grant was also pleased to reach the last four of the competition given that his side is struggling in the English Premier League.
He said,  “I think he is a professional guy, he was training hard when he didn’t play and wasn’t even in the squad. We changed his position to midfield a month ago.  But he got his chance tonight and he likes to speak only on the pitch, and he spoke very well today. It’s very special; to be in the semi-final is not usual for a club like us, but to perform like this against best team in the country and to score four goals. I can’t ask for more”.
Avram was of the opinion that a victory against the Red Devils, will help boost the confidence of the players. The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 boss was also hopeful that his side plays the next match with the same winning mentality. The Hammers will face Sunderland AFC at the Stadium of Light this weekend in the English Premier League.
The Israeli said, “It’s a new team with new players and each game we are better, and I’m very pleased with this and I hope we can continue winning. We have a tough game against Sunderland on Sunday but if we continue to work we’ll continue winning”.
West Ham United are rock-bottom in the Premier League and are engaged in a fight for survival with fellow strugglers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic. The London club has not won a league game away from home and have managed just 12 points after 15 matches.
