“West Ham need to improve defence” says Scott Parker
Scott Parker, the West Ham midfielder, said that his side had to play defensively if they wanted better results. Parker admitted that it was disappointing and frustrating to waste good performances by taking the lead early on and then ending the match in
a draw. The hammers have twice taken the lead in the last week and drawn both the games.
West Ham co-owner David Sullivan reportedly set a target of a minimum of seven points from four games, and after two games the hammers have only managed two. This means that West Ham have to earn a win in their upcoming games against Blackpool and Liverpool
to meet Sullivan’s target points. West Ham might be able to handle Blackpool, but the resurgent Liverpool will present a tough challenge.
Scott Parker told reporters, “The whole team needs to be more defensive-minded. When we get into a winning position we need to see the game out and we are struggling to do that. It's one thing to concede from a 40-yard screamer or when a player beats
four defenders and curls one in to the top corner.”
He added, “But when an opponent gets a free header three yards from goal - like West Brom's equalizer on Wednesday night - that is just not acceptable. We can't keep on allowing sloppy goals like these if we are going to turn draws into wins.”
West Ham are currently at the bottom of the Premier League, four points above the relegation zone.
The West Ham player insisted that their bottom position in the League did not reflect on the amount of effort the team put in. He said,
“We are trying our hardest to meet the targets the chairman wants. But it is easier said than done. We should have won our last two games and it's our own fault that we didn't.”
West Ham teammate Kieron Dyer agreed with Parker, saying that the bottom clubs of the Premier League played with fear and said that his side was done for if they could not win against Blackpool on Saturday. He said,
“We said Birmingham was a ‘must win’ game, but against Blackpool we need three points otherwise people will start saying we might be doomed.”
