West Ham still backing Avram Grant
Avram Grant has claimed that he still has full support of the West Ham owners, despite the club’s terrible display against Newcastle on Wednesday.
The Hammers were thrashed 5-0 at St. James Park, leaving them at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League table. The result ended a promising run of form for West Ham, who had earned eight points from their last four matches.
Avram Grant’s charges face Barnsley in the FA Cup on Saturday, followed by a Carling Cup tie against Birmingham on Tuesday. West Ham owners David Gold and David Sullivan are set to hold a board meeting after the two encounters, leading many to believe that
Grant’s future at the club hinges on the results of these important cup matches.
However, the Israeli insisted that his job is secure, saying that the meeting will focus on the club’s strategy for the rest of the season. Speaking on his future at Upton Park, Grant said, “To live in this club is to live with the rumours. It is a matter
of what your boss is telling you and I have a good relationship with the owners. I don't think they are shy guys to tell me something else. One of them (Gold) is here and we are only concentrating on how to make the squad stronger.”
West Ham have had huge problems with injury this season and the manager is in desperate need of shoring up both his defence and attack. Co-chairman David Gold recently revealed that club is looking at fifteen different players to bring in during the January
transfer window. Grant says he appreciates the backing of the owners, despite the club’s much publicised debts.
Grant said, “We need a stronger squad. We have a lot of long-term injuries and we will do everything to make the squad stronger because we need it, otherwise it will not be easy to continue like this. Everybody is aware of the financial situation. The owners
took over the club in more than £100million of debt and they are doing everything to deal with this situation.”
Even if West Ham are successful in the pursuit of their January targets, they still face an uphill battle to avoid relegation. We will be closer to knowing what the future holds for the Hammers when they face Arsenal on 15 January.
