In a recent unfortunate event, the cricketing fraternity lost one of it potent officials, Clyde Duncan, after the West Indian umpire bid farewell at the age of 57, after battling from cancer. On July 27, 2011, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Duncan-c54739 passed away at Trinidad, his neighbouring
town, where the official was accompanied by his wife and other relatives, undergoing treatment for his illness.
Following the mishap, the President of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Julian-Robert-Hunte-c69628, offered his condolences to Duncan’s family.
“It is with immense sadness that the Board has learnt of the passing of Clyde. We extend deepest condolences to his wife Fay and their four children,” stated Dr. Hunte.
The President went on adding that Clyde served the nation’s cricket faithfully for over two decades and was a modest official of the sport.
Apart from the Dr. Hunte, Guyana Cricket Board’s president Chetram Singh also rested his empathy for the Umpire’s family stating that ‘Duncan's loss would be felt across the Caribbean’.
“Clyde has contributed so much to umpiring in the West Indies and Guyana and was always willing to impart his knowledge to the youngsters” said Singh.
Originally hailing from Vreed-En-Hoop, Guyana, Clyde took on the Umpiring profession in the late 80s. His debut assignment came in March, 1988, at a One Day International Fixture at Bourda, where the West Indians took on http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
A few years into his career, in March, 1991, Clyde made his Test umpiring premier, again in Georgetown, for a bout between West Indies and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
As for the limited overs format, the Guyana umpire officiated his first Twenty20 game in June, 2008, during the fixture between West Indies and Australia.
On a whole, with a decent cricketing career spanning over two decades, Duncan officiated two Tests, 21 ODIs and six Twenty20 Internationals. The umpire’s last Test came in 1994 in Georgetown, his ODI and Twenty20 umpiring came to a close in 2010.
Apart from on field duty, Duncan also rendered his services as the third and fourth umpire in many other International matches as well as being a member of the International Cricket Council’s (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) International Panel.
