Clouds of uncertainty have covered the Sri-Lanka and West Indies ODI series after a disappointing Test match series. Now, the weather conditions may lead to the postponement of the one day match series as well.
There are chances that the series may be postponed until January 2011. However, there is no confirmation from the two boards. The teams are scheduled to play a five-match ODI series and the first match is scheduled to start today.
The confusion rose due to an official statement which circulated in the Sri-Lankan board which was later denied by the Sri-Lankan board. There has been no official statement from the West Indian cricket board on the postponement or the continual of the series.
The West Indian blazing opener, Chris Gayle mentioned on twitter about the state of the series. According to Gayle he was headed to his country due to the postponement of the series. He claimed, on his twitter account, that the series had been officially
called-off.
The players have been unable to do any out door practice due to the continuous rain in Hambantota, the venue which is scheduled to host the first two of the five matches in the series. It is also one of the venues which will host matches in the World Cup
and in that context; the matches were of great value. The other three matches are scheduled to be played in Colombo and both these venues were used for the auditions prior to the World Cup.
The series is also important for both the teams as they will be looking forward to get some match practice before the upcoming World Cup. This series will help the teams to assess the performances of the players and will be crucial in determining the World
Cup squads. Other teams would have also wanted to see some action on these grounds to analyze the nature of the wicket.
With torrential rain over the past few days, the chances of the series to go ahead are very low. Even if the rain does stop, the conditions may not be favorable for the teams to play. It may be possible that the Sri-Lankan team would have proposed a postponement
of the series and are awaiting conformation from the West Indian officials.
