The West Indies Cricket Board announced today its 14-member women squad for the tour of India early next year. Merissa Aguilleira, the Wicketkeeper from Trinidad retained her Captaincy of the side.
The squad includes mostly players who were part of the West Indies side that won the T20 leg of the inaugural edition of the ICC Women's Cricket Challenge tournament in South Africa last month. The side finished
runner up in the 50-over format of the same tournament. The only new face in the 14-member squad flying to Subcontinent earlier next year would be the Guyana all-rounder June-Ogle Thomas.
The 24-year-old West Indies Captain from Trinidad was confident that her side could build on their successful tour of South Africa where the side reached the finals of both the T20 and One-Day format. "We
need to show improvement from the tour in South Africa," said the Wicketkeeper with an experience of 28 One Day Internationals and 18 T20Is. "Our experienced players will be the ones to lead from the front, but in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 everyone made a contribution
at some stage so we know we have a team with depth and strength."
The Caribbean women enjoyed a great run in the inaugural ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge and had strong individual performances in both batting and bowling. The Jamaican teenager Stafanie http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 finished the
tournament at the top of the run-chart, while the right-arm off-spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Anisa-Mohammed-c44783, was the second-highest wicket-taker of the Championship.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 team will reach Mumbai on the 3rd of January next year to play five One Day Internationals followed by three T20 Internationals against host team India. Most of the players in the
14-member squad will be visiting India for the first time but Aguilleira was confident that the girls would play well against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, which is rated above West Indies in the ICC rankings.
"It will be the first time in India for many of us but we believe we can rise above the challenge. We want to continue from where we left off in South Africa where we played so very well," said Aguilleira.
"It will be a challenging tour but we are confident we can do well against the Indian girls on their home soil.”
The first one-day between the two outfits is scheduled to be played in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 on January 10.
