West Indies Cricket, on Wednesday, announced its 13-member squad for the first Test of the three-match series against Australia, starting at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown on Saturday, April 7, 2012.
The Windies selectors have recalled left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine to the squad for the first time since 2010, due to his outstanding performance for Guyana in the Regional Four-Day competition.
The 28-year-old batting all-rounder returned as the leading run-getter in the Regional Four-Day competition with a tally of 582 runs at an average of 44.76 in seven matches.
The WICB chairman of selectors, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clyde-Godfrey-Butts-c51354 hailed Deonarine’s first-class performance for Guyana this season and hopes that the all-rounder will bring the same momentum into international cricket.
"Deonarine has been the leading the batsman this season in the Regional Four-Day and has demonstrated his commitment and a new level of maturity," said Clyde Butts speaking to the media reporters after announcing the squad.
"We have not seen many big scores from the batsmen in this year's competition, but he has played some very good innings for Guyana and also bowled very well coming onto the latter half of the tournament. We expect this same level of focus against the Aussies.
He is sure to be an asset," he added further.
Deonarine’s right-arm off-spin has fetched him 20 first-class wickets as well in the regional four-day tournament. The tally also includes two five-wicket hauls.
