West Indies board ends contracts over poor fitness

The West Indies Cricket Board has said that the non-renewal of the contracts of some of the West Indian cricketers like Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor or http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Narsingh-Deonarine-c78681 was very much on expected lines. There were five cricketers who lost their West Indian contracts, apart from the aforementioned, and the WICB said the reason for Sarwan and Deonarine’s axing was their poor fitness levels.

WICB did not spare their fast bowler, Taylor as well, citing his frequent injuries as the reason behind his sacking. They also questioned the manner in which he went about his rehabilitation after the knee injury stuck.

In a press release, the cricket board said that the management and the selection committee was unhappy about Sarwan’s “indifferent attitude and sporadic approach towards fitness”, which had made the board take that decision.

The press release also said, “It is the considered view of the selection committee, following consultations with the specialists in the team management, that Ramnaresh's less-than-satisfactory and fluctuating fitness levels have directly contributed to multiple injuries thereby causing him to be unavailable for selection to the West Indies team.”

Sarwan, who plays for Guyana, will be captaining his side in the Champions League T20 in South Africa. He is one of the most experienced players in the West Indies and has featured in 83 Tests and 156 ODIs. However, he has yet to play in a Test match this year, apart from having represented the side in only four ODIs and seven T20Is this year.

Speaking of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915, the WICB release pointed to his continuous injury issues that had been the problem. The West Indian board said that the WICB was disappointed with his commitment issues, and hence the contract had been severed.

The press release lambastes Deonarine for his lack of attitude during practice and off-season training. The release says that Deonarine’s fitness and training methods were the problem despite having been sent an official notice. Deonarine is a middle-order batsman who can also bowl off-spin for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760.

According to the statement, “Deonarine's level of fitness is regrettably, unacceptable for an international cricketer.”

West Indies have had a very poor record in 2010 in international cricket. They were beaten by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 and two more to South Africa without winning a single game. They were knocked out of the ICC World T20 in the Super Eight stage.
