West Indies defeat Pakistan in 4th One Day International: Match Recap
Hosts, West Indies, have finally defeated Pakistan in their 4th encounter of the ongoing five-match One Day International (ODI) series by just a run in a match that was disrupted by rain on more than one occasion at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown,
Barbados.
After winning the toss, surprisingly, Darren Sammy unlike previous occasions chose to field first in a bid to get something out of the pitch early on.
Pakistan started the game with extreme caution by batting slowly and not rushing into things. The openers clearly seemed to have been instructed not to take too many risks early on.
However, before Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad could nurture a threatening partnership, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 managed to get rid of Shehzad when Dwayne Bravo took a diving catch off a delivery bowled by Kemar Roach. Shehzad had scored six runs off eleven deliveries.
Next man in was Asad http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shafiq-c89281, who has become a great addition in Pakistan’s middle order batting line-up. Together Hafeez and Shafiq made the West Indies bowlers look amateur and played shots all around the park at will. The two clearly seemed at ease against
the bowling attack, which came bolting in at them.
At the end of 38 overs, Pakistan took the score to 164 runs for the loss of one wicket. However, it was Dwayne Bravo, who broke the agonizing partnership, as he managed to remove Asad Shfiq by getting him caught by Lendl Simmons after the batsman had scored
71 runs off a 102 deliveries.
Skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972, was the next to go as he struggled to find connection with bat and ball. He departed by
getting bowled by Devendra Bishoo after scoring five runs. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 tail just lacked the gas to cruise in the dying moments of the game.
While on the other hand, Mohammad Hafeez, scored a remarkable 121 runs after playing 138 deliveries. He was also bowled by Bishoo. During their innings the match was interrupted more than once due to rain and the batsmen had to readjust every time they came
out to bat again. In the end Afridi’s XI scored 248 runs for the hosts to chase.
However, due to Duckworth-Lewis method the required target was reduced to 223 runs in 39 overs. With moist conditions the spinners were certain to get help from the playing conditions.
Pakistan ran havoc on the second ball of the innings by grabbing the wicket of opener Kirk Edwards, who was caught by wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman on nil off a delivery bowled by pacer Junaid http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khan-c71319.
Darren Bravo then came in next and together with opener Simmons managed to halt the Pakistani bowling onslaught. The two batsmen took the score to 55 runs by the end of the eighth over.
In the ninth over, Junaid struck again and dismantled the partnership by taking the wicket of Bravo, who in a stride to go for a big hit ended up getting caught at third man. The batsman scored 21 runs.
The highlight of the West Indies innings was a superb batting display from Simmons, who lost his wicket after scoring 76 runs off 70 deliveries. On the other hand, Dwayne Bravo’s crucial six in the last over before the game was called off due to rain virtually
won the hosts the game.
Hafeez was named as the man of the match for his splendid innings.
With this win the Windies have something to look forward to for the next encounter, which is set to take place on May 5, 2011 at Providence.
