West Indies inducts new players in ODI squad for series against Pakistan
West Indian selectors have unveiled a thirteen member squad for the first two One Day Internationals’ against Pakistan. The men from the Caribbean would play a five-match ODI series, in addition to one Twenty20, and two test matches
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 scheduled to start from 21st April, 2011 in St.Lucia.
The Chairman of the West Indian selection panel, Clyde Butts stated the core of the team is capable of serving the team for years to come. According to him, the fresh blood inducted in the squad has the potential and the desire to
succeed, and hence received the nod. Butts added the time was rife for making wholesome changes as the West Indians vow to regain their lost glory at the highest level of the game.
"There are some familiar faces who have not been included on this occasion, but we have already identified the core of players who we will build the team around. The time has come for us to introduce a fresh crop of players who we
believe have a deep desire to excel and who can be tested at the international level."
The selection panel did not consider Kieron Pollard for the series since he is currently engaged in playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) in India. The selection panel added that all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who although, was injured
at the start of the ICC World Cup 2011, will be participating in the ODIs but is also expected to travel to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 for the last part of IPL.
This would mean Pollard would sit out the two matches test series following the ODIs.
On the other hand, it seems the West Indian Cricket Board gave in to the IPL’s high stakes by allowing their two leading players to take part in the tournament, and ensuring that they are considered for all formats, even if their IPL
commitments results in missing national duty.
"It was mutually determined that Pollard would be best served by being allowed to hone his T20 skills in the Indian Premier League, which will bring future benefit to West Indies cricket," the release stated. "He will not play in the
series against Pakistan, but remains committed to West Indies cricket and will be available for future selection to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 team in all formats."
Similar sentiments were echoed for Bravo who remains an integral part of the squad in test as well as limited overs cricket.
Meanwhile, the selection panel retained the under fire leader of the team, Darren Sammy, the all-rounder was a big failure in the recent World Cup and drew sharp criticism from all quarters for his limp performance.
The cricketing experts in the Caribbean think his inclusion in the playing eleven only disturbs the balance of the team, especially if it forces a talented fast bowler like Andre Russell, who is also a handy batsman, to miss out on
a spot in the playing eleven.
The squad also has spots for Marlon Samuels who earned a recall to the national team following a two year ban for alleged involvement with bookies. The nephew of former West Indian all-rounder and current coach of the Irish national
team, Phil Simmons also found a place in the team.
Squad for first two ODIs: Darren Sammy (Capt.), Dwayne Bravo (Vice-Captain), Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Russell-c87177, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Devon
Smith, Devon Thomas (wk).
