West Indies have lost two of their key players, Adrian Barath and Carlton Baugh due to hamstring injuries just a day before the day ICC World Cup 2011 gets underway in the Subcontinent.
The West Indies Cricket Board has confirmed that both players will not be a part of the mega event and will be replaced by Kirk Edwards and Devon Thomas.
WICB has given an application to the International Cricket Council technical committee in order to make the replacement. However, the Board will have to wait until the permission is granted to them.
The Caribbean Kings have struggled in the recent past to win matches and injuries to some of their key players will dig their problems deeper.
Both Barath and Baugh had the potential to win matches for them and will definitely be missed in the side.
The role of an opener is the most important one in any form of cricket. Barath was an ideal choice for the Windies to open the innings alongside the flamboyant Chris Gayle.
The pair complemented each other very well as Gayle is known for his powerful batting and Barath is a wristy player who keeps rotating the strike.
On the other hand, Baugh had been in good form since the three-match One Day International series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758. He has been a handy cricketer in the death overs, scoring runs at a brisk rate for his team.
The West Indian team will have to plan something very quickly in order to get off to a strong start in the World Cup. Apart from them, other teams like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and England have also lost some of their top players due to injuries.
The Kangaroos suffered a huge blow as they lost their star middle-order batsman Michael Hussey during the ODI series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749. There were hopes that Hussey may join the team in the later half of the tournament, but Cricket Australia did not take any
risks and announced his replacement.
Similarly, England lost one of their best ODI batsmen, Eoin Morgan due to a fractured finger.
