West Indies’ skipper, Darren Sammy, exhilarated by the two consecutive wins in the ODI series
The West Indian captain, Darren Sammy, is pleased with his team’s performance in the recently concluded One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan.
They were 3-0 down after the first three matches but came back strongly, owing to their sterling performance, to win the last two games with impressive team work.
Pakistan defeated the Windies by eight wickets in the first ODI, played on 23rd April, 2011, at St Lucia.
The second match was also comprehensively won by Pakistan, with a margin of seven wickets, on 25th April, at the same venue.
Pakistan overcame West Indies by three wickets in the third match on 28th April, at Barbados.
West Indies won the fourth match by a close margin of just one run in a rain affected match which was decided according to Duckworth – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lewis-c72807 method. The match was contested at the same venue on 2nd May.
The win, coming by any means, boosted the confidence of the team.
The Caribbeans won the fifth and last match by a huge margin of 10 wickets on 5th May at Guyana.
Mohammad Hafeez was declared ‘Player of the series’ due to his all round performance in the series.
He scored 267 runs at an average of 53.40 runs, a best of 121 runs and scored one century and two fifties in the series. He also held six wickets at an average of 23.50 runs per wicket with a best of 2 for 31 runs.
Lendl Simmons was the highest scorer in the series, posting 279 runs on board at an average of 69.75 runs, the best of unbeaten 77 runs with four fifties.
"Simmons has been great all throughout and again today he demonstrated his ability with the bat", Sammy said after the win. "His shot-selection was superb, and he formed a very good partnership with Kirk, who also played well. It is good to see we are getting performances like these. The players are growing and the self-belief is there”.
"We now look ahead to the Test matches with confidence. Some new players will be coming in to join the setup and we know we will maintain the same momentum we had during the ODIs".
It was an unforgettable match for Devendra Bishoo as well since he appeared for the first time at his home ground representing his country and more importantly in the presence of his beloved mother.
He is the find of the tour so far, being the leading wicket taker with 11 wickets at a superb average of 17.18 runs per wicket and a best of 3 for 37 runs.
Sammy was also pleased with the fine spell of bowling from Ravi Rampaul, who grabbed four wickets and he himself picked three important wickets.
It was Sammy’s first experience to win two matches consecutively and he was thankful to the crowd, who gave them full support throughout the match, as well.
