West Indies team respects past players: Darren Sammy – Cricket News Update
Following Denesh Ramdin’s disrespectful jibe at West Indies legend, Sri Viv Richards, the national team captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382, stepped in to neutralise the situation, and clarified that the team had great respect for past players and their achievements.
“We as a West Indian team have a lot of respect for our past players especially somebody so great as Sir Viv,” Sammy said, going on to add that the team was highly inspired by
Fire in Babylon, which was a testament to the great history of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 cricket.
The comments came after Ramdin, who had been criticised by Richards for his poor form of late (having scored just 51 runs in the first two Tests), brandished a note which read “YEH VIV TALK NAH” after scoring a century in the 3rd Test played at
Edgbaston in Birmingham.
The action earned the wicket-keeper batsman severe criticism from all quarters – former West Indies fast bowler http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Anthony-Holding-c75756 claimed that it was “unbecoming behaviour from a player”, and that Ramdin deserved to be reprimanded.
The 27-year-old also issued an apology to Richards, admitting that he had probably gotten too emotional. The former batsman however, was far from convinced, claiming that Ramdin’s century, scored during a lost Test series, was hardly a cause for pride or
celebration.
Sammy, however, adopted a neutral stance, and urged both parties to look past the incident.
“I know Ramdin will probably have a word with him and I hope there is no love lost. And we will move on and continue respecting our great past players,” he said.
The 27-year-old was fined 20% of his match fee by the ICC, and match referee http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Roshan-Siriwardene-Mahanama-c86863 stated that reaching a milestone should not be used as an opportunity to respond to critics. He also added that the ICC hoped such behaviour would not be displayed
by any other players.
Sammy also attempted to smooth over ruffled feathers as far as the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625’s fine was concerned, pointing out that while everyone was prone to making mistakes, the right action had to be taken in the end.
“The ICC match referee has done his part,” he said. “We are all human beings and things do happen and as a team we support our players. That said we've got to do what is right. Denesh realised he probably overdid it a little bit.”
