West Indies v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 – 2nd Test (Day 5) – Match Recap – Rain forces match to end on draw
The prospect of victory was snatched from both Australia and the West Indies as rain forced the second Test of the ongoing Frank-Worrell Trophy to end on a draw, with both teams left disappointed on the last day of their battle at the Queen's Park Oval in
Port of Spain, Trinidad on April 19.
The day began with the Aussies at 73 for 3 in their second innings, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978 (3) at the crease. After a series of below par performances, Ponting appeared to be getting his rhythm back, and managed to bring his individual
score up to 41 – the highest in Australia’s second innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382 also claimed his first scalp of the
game, with Clarke caught and bowled at 15 in the 43rd over, leaving the Aussies at 95 for 5.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KAJ-Roach-c1758, who had managed to demolish the Aussies’ top order on day 4, struck once again, claiming Hussey’s wicket, and following
that up with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BW-Hilfenhaus-c1204 on duck, bringing his tally up to 10 scalps.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 decided to declare.
The Windies stepped up to chase their target in 61 overs, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AB-Barath-c886 (5) and Powell (4) opening for their side, but Hilfenhaus intervened with a devastating new-ball spell, claiming both wickets by the 4th over, leaving the Windies at
a vulnerable 13 for 2 early in the 2nd innings.
Sammy moved himself up the batting order, and proved to be just what the host team needed, scoring 30 off 26 deliveries (including a 14 off 3 during Hilfenhaus’ over), bringing his team up to par with the 3.52 asking rate. He was joined at the crease by
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DM-Bravo-c1386, who proved to be more of a spectator as he contributed just 8 runs, and watched on as the skipper pushed on with his valiant innings.
However, the weather in Port of Spain made it impossible for the Windies to continue with what was shaping up to be a intriguing chase, and the match was drawn owing to rain, with the hosts at 53 for 2.
Roach’s ten wickets, the highest by a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 bowler since Curtly Ambrose’s 10 scalps in 1993, earned him the Player of the Match award, but his efforts were not enough to enable the Windies to level the series score.
With Australia leading 1-0, the final upcoming match, scheduled to begin on April 23rd at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica, will prove to be the series decider.
