West Indies vs. Ireland: SWOT analysis of Ireland’s bowlers – ICC World Cup 2011
The ICC World Cup 2011 is entering into a critical phase and we will start to see some amazing battles among the top teams. The tournament is huge and every team wants to deliver their best performance to reach the later stages. There are some teams which
are not the firm favourites for the title, but must work hard to leave a lasting impression in this prestigious event.
One such team is Ireland, as they performed their hearts out and have created a major upset in the tournament. Ireland will play the West Indies today and will have to play with a positive frame of mind if they are to have any sort of chance against their
more experienced opponent.
Ireland has some very good bowlers in their line-up which can easily make things difficult for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751’s bowlers:
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Johnston-c53002 is a good bowling choice for Ireland, as he has a tendency of picking important wickets in the starting overs of the match. He has taken 6 wickets in the tournament and has shown some good control with the ball in the early overs of the innings.
Johnston can make things difficult for the West Indies’ opening batsmen by testing them with a good line on the off stump side.
John Mooney is another promising bowler in Ireland’s squad and has the ability to bowl some very good overs for his team. Mooney has taken 5 wickets in the tournament and can make things challenging for the West Indian batsmen. He could prove as a good third
bowling option for Ireland and can halt the scoring rate during the power plays.
Mooney has a good tendency of bowling wicket to wicket and can easily provoke batsmen like Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle to play some risky shots on the off stump side.
Ireland’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Dockrell-c59135 is another bowler of significance in the line-up, as he has the ability to bowl some good spin during the middle overs. He has taken 5 wickets in the tournament and has also been the most economical bowler for Ireland. The West
Indian batsmen have not shown a great deal of confidence in playing spin bowling. This factor will motivate Dockrell to bowl with a great deal of accuracy to the West Indian batsmen and will also prove deadly against Bravo and Devon Thomas.
There are some major weaknesses within Ireland’s bowling line-up, as most of their bowlers have not been economical during their spells. William Ranklin has not been miserly during his early spells and has given too many easy deliveries to the opening batsmen.
This can easily give a good opportunity to a batsman like Gayle to score some major boundaries in the starting overs and take the West Indies to a solid start in their innings.
The lack of a proper fifth bowler will also pose some issues for Ireland, as there is chance that the West Indian batsmen might score some major runs during the middle overs of the innings. Ireland does not have a seriously threatening bowler in their squad
and this could become a huge issue against their opponents. The West Indies middle-order has not scored many runs in the tournament and this will give an ideal opportunity to the experienced bowlers of Ireland to build some genuine pressure on their middle-order.
