The first day of the first Test between The West Indies and New Zealand, which started yesterday, had the visitors 232 for four at stumps, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980 staged a partnership
of 97 runs for the first wicket with the score at lunch at 71 without loss. New Zealand’s defiant batting approach laid the foundation for a good score as the innings progressed under the Antigua sunshine. The smooth progression was derailed after the Kiwis’
lost Flynn for a well made 45 off 127 deliveries, with the score at 97 in the 39th over. Martin Guptill kept on playing with assurance and piled on the runs however, as he helped himself to his eighth half century in 22 appearances for his team.
Guptill was supported by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129, who managed to score 25 runs in his unconventional number three position. McCullum was eventually caught by Deonarine off the bowling of Roach, who put on an impressive bowling display by just conceding 46 runs
in 15 overs and snaring a wicket. Guptill however, kept on peppering the West Indian bowlers and cracked 14 boundaries and a towering six, on his way to his 3 Test Match century. The West Indian attack failed to make further inroads for the most part of 30
overs, as Captain Ross Taylor scored a patient 45 runs off 96 deliveries as a supporting role for Guptill. He was eventually bowled by Narine, who managed to sneak one past his defenses to leave New Zealand at 3 for 223 in the 85th over.
Agonizingly for Guptill and for New Zealand, the opening batsman fell three short of his eighth century after he attempted a slog sweep off Narine's bowling. Guptill top edged the ball and was caught by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/N-Deonarine-c2051. His dismissal helped the West Indies
come back into the game with the score at 228 for four.
No further damage was done since Guptill’s departure, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-Wagner-c79182 safely negotiated the remaining overs of the day. New Zealand finished on 232 for 4 at Stumps.
For the West Indies it was once again http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Philip-Narine-c91869, who was the pick of the bowlers. Narine snapped up 3 wickets for just 73 runs at an economy rate of 2.60, which gave the Kiwi batsmen plenty to think about.
