I'm considering auditioning for West Side Story, but I have a problem...I don't know how to prepare for the dancing part of the audition. It says we will be taught a dance and then perform it with a group. Is there any certain way I should prepare for this? Are there any dance moves I should know? Any help is appreciated :)

  1. Well, the dancing in West Side Story is mainly jazz based with a Latin feel to it for certain numbers (like America).  Keep that in mind when you audition.  When you get to the audition, stand in the front show the director and/or choreographer can see you.  If the choreographer has an assistant there, watch them while you dance, because they usually have the exact feel to their dancing that the director is looking for.  Wear something noticeable, but not too bold, such as a solid shirt with a vibrant hair band or belt.  If you mess up, keep going, and add your own flavor if it feels welcome.  And, most importantly, SMILE!

  2. AHHH! I did West Side Story with my theatre company last year! Omigod, you are soo lucky! I love that play so much! We're doing Sound of Music this year, and I am not that thrilled.

I know this sounds vaugue, but you have to be jazzy. Don't overthink it. Just look up some swing dances on Youtube and practice a little.

Who are you auditioning for? I was Velma, which is mostly a dance role, but I got 3 understudies.
