West Virginia falls to Marshall in season finale by 1-3 : Volleyball News
Under the direction of Coach Jacob, the Women’s Volleyball Team of Marshall University beat Mountaineers of West Virginia University on Friday, November 25. The Marshall squad managed to get hold of victory by posting 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23) in
the season finale. The Mountaineers failed to save the crucial match after a long battle.
Cameron Yoho and Desirre Wilkerson were critical to the Thundering Herd’s success in the match. The two brilliant hitters supplied plenty of power to their shots and tallied 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Following them were the amazing duo of Sacha Byous-McConnell
and Abby Tomas, who contributed 22 kills (11 each). A total of 10 kills were added by Laura Der, in addition to her 4 service aces in the match. In fact, thhe Herd dominated the opposite side with strong offense.
Nonetheless, they did equally well on the defence side. They formed strong combinations and offered a great deal of resistance to the Mountaineers’ tricky spikes. In this regards, Ryanne Milligan was ahead everyone in the game. She set a record of career-high
29 digs in the match and helped Marshall to showcase some of their best floor defence of the year.
In the first set, Thundering Herd got off to a good start and built an early lead. Mountaineers started out slow and trailed behind in the first set. The Herd did not allow WVU to recover quickly. They kept moving at a fast pace and closed off the first
set with a 25-19 victory. Yoho and Wilkerson were the most highlighted players on winning side with four kills each.
After dropping the opening set, the Mountaineers came out firing in the second set. They hit back aggressively and tried to cover the deficit, while the Herd refused to give up. As a result, the game turned into a heated competition and both sides exchanged
long rallies. Eventually Mountaineers managed to take two-point advantage in the end and won second set, 27-25.
For a moment, it seemed as if West Virginia was back in the game but Thundering Herd changed the scenario with back to back wins in the following two sets. They captured both sets (25-22, 25-23) and settled for match victory.
Senior middle-blocker (MB), Cameron Yoho, commented after the match."It's amazing to end the season with a win against West Virginia. It's probably the best way to end my career here at Marshall. I'm so proud of my team and how hard they fought. Tonight
couldn't get much better."
The Head Coach Jacobs concluded: "I am really most proud to know that when Cameron Yoho and Andrea Booker think of their last match in the Cam Henderson centre, they will always have a smile on their face.
