  1. West coast sparring which is rarely seen nowadays is just point sparring with points allowed for kicking the groin. It was popular in California sport karate tournaments but none of the current leagues allow it anymore. Last I saw it in use was about two years ago.

Point sparring is when a judge sees a clean hit to a target point, they yell stop and the judges will call for a point. If 2 out of 3, or 3 out of 5 judges agree on the same technique, a point is awarded.  A point is when a punch or kick is made to the head or torso. Most sport karate tournaments have point sparring set for accumulation of points over a two minute period. Coaches are allowed on the side, and each can call a 10 second time out to coach their player. Point sparring benefits those that have speed and are accurate in their execution.

Continuous fighting is much like boxing rounds. The targets are the same as point sparring. There are usually two rounds. The center ref does not yell stop unless there is a violation or the time runs out. Judges at the corners are assigned a fighter that they count points for. In continuous, some circuits require that you throw a kick in for every set number of punches. Coaches are allowed to coach during the break between rounds.
