Western Australia clinches U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship Title
Nathan McGuire scored the game-winning golden goal in the extra-time and had an assist, as Western Australia (WA) defeated New South Wales (NSW) by 2-1 to lift the title of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship, which is being played at the Perth
Hockey Stadium, on July 16, 2011.
The defensemen from NSW and WA demonstrated dazzling performances in the final show and denied many attacks from the other side.
Though the Western squad was standing at the fourth position at the point-chart, it was selected for the title-claiming fight owing to its luck and fortitude. However, they proved their worth in the final match and won the game via a golden goal.
The crucial grand finale started in an anxious way with NSW and WA missing some opportunities. No goal was scored in the first 30 minutes of play despite several attacks and counter-attacks. The strikers from NSW accomplished some offensive moves, but the
players from WA showed wonderful passing in the first round.
Aaron Zalewski of NSW displayed splendid and well-coordinated hockey in the first thirty-five minutes of play. He was the player who drove the ball inside the defensive circle of Western Australia and created a penalty-corner chance for NSW.
With one minute left on the clock, the NSW’s side made an attempt, but it was denied by Ben Rennie in front of the goal. In the rebound effort, Brenton Osborne took the ball under his stick, volleyed a scoop in the cage, and put his team ahead on the scoreboard.
The NSW team was leading the game at 1-0 at the end of the half-time.
The play resumed in the second half with both teams fixing their guns on each other in searching for lead. Both the NSW and Western Australia received many penalty-corners, but all in vain. The goal-keepers from both the two teams were dynamic to deny the
attacks of the either side.
Tristan White of NSW made some brilliant penetrations into the defensive circle of Western squad, but Mat Lim and Cale Walsh denied all attempts.
With six minutes left on the clock, Brodie Sarre converted a short-corner and had it all even at one-all. The score remained same at the completion of time and both squads moved into the sudden-death round. With four minutes into the extra-time, Nathan McGuire
received a pass from Daniel Sampey of WA and unleashed a powerful drag flick into the goal. It was not a simple win, but the golden goal made the title victory possible for WA by 2-1.
