Western Australia defeats Northern Territory in Australian Hockey League – Hockey Update
The Men’s hockey team of Western Australia (WA) rendered an outstanding performance to defeat Northern Territory (NT) by two goals, 3-1 in the fixture of Australian Hockey League (AHL) contested at the Sydney Olympic Park on August 9, 2011.
Both teams have had great confidence in their attacks and landed onto the field with a mission to ruin the defence line of either side. However, the West Australian squad established their dominance from the very early minutes in the head of ball possession.
They executed well-organised passes in the game that assisted them in the hard fought match.
The fast-paced game from Western squad filled with back-to-back strikes paid off for them in the 7th minute of the match when they drew first blood through a field effort. Sam Pike – the veteran attacker of Western Australia received a pass from
the full-back position and drove it into the D-line. From the right flank of the goal, Pike slammed a crashing hatchet into the backboard to open scoring for the Western Australia.
After scoring the maiden goal, the WA line-up not only established their dominance but enhanced the morale of players. They showed a united game in which everyone was playing as an individual as well a team-member. The West Australian side received a short
corner in the 16th minute of the mark. Amazingly the hit was blocked in the hands of NT’s custodian that increased the hopes for their revival into the game. However, Andrew Jacobs managed a rebound attack, unleashed a solid shot at the back of
the net and doubled the tally. Though both the squads approached the defence lines of each other’s side in the remaining time of the first half, it was the action from the two sides and WA was holding a two goal edge over NT at half-time.
Following the tiny break, the Northern Territory attack came alive. They obtained a short corner in the very starting minutes of the second half. Travis Carroll was the player whose shot was blocked by the goalposts. It was a golden chance for NT to reduce
the lead and start the process for making a comeback.
On the other side, the players from Western part were playing a relaxing game in the second half of play. They drove the ball across the field and showed their dominance in the match. Craig Boyne of Western squad scored off a short corner and expanded the
lead up to three goals. He notched the goal through a drag-flick in front of the goal.
Jason Gabriel of Northern Territory received a pass from Ben Poulton and marked a speedy shot into the backboard to bring his team into the score net. However, this solitary goal could not save them from humiliated defeat and they lost the match at 3-1.
