Western Australia knocks down ACT by 8-4 in U-21 Australian National Championship
Daniel Sampey scored five goals and had a support, as Western Australia (WA) powered a commanding 8-4 win over Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in the day six game of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship on July 11, 2011.
It was one of the most scoring competitions of the championship, where both the teams marked a large number of goals against each other. Both the squads were flying high before entering into the field. The Western boys opened the game impressively and scored first goal in the 14th minute of the match. Kyle Angwin received a pass from Sampey and tapped it into the left flank.
In a counter-strike, Jack Wallace dribbled the defenders and struck a powerful shot at the WA goal to tie the knots at one-each in the 17th minute. In a brilliant move, Jonathon Parry took the ball under his stick, sent a reverse-shot into goal in the same minute and regained a single goal lead. In a matter of two minutes, Mark Brodie after getting the ball back marked a low-flying shot into the ACT's net and expanded the lead up to two goals. In the 27th minute of the first half, Daniel Sampey made a lengthy run towards the downfield and scored a goal to increase the advantage up to three goals, 4-1.
After conceding four goals, the ACT attack came alive and scored two goals before going into the second half. Arin Doig notched a goal from the field effort and reduced the lead down to two goals, 4-2. Richard Howson converted a penalty-corner in the dying moments to close out the period at 4-3.
In an unprecedented move, the second period was dominated by WA which obtained a four more goals, while limiting ACT only for a single goal. With six minutes into the second half, the defender of WA denied the ACT attack and gave Sampey a chance to score the goal which he did not waste. He slightly chipped the ball inside the cage and expanded the advantage up to four goals.
In the 43rd minute of the match, Sampey received an indirect pass from Neil Rose and stuck a dribbling shot into the goal. He was alone in action and was a menace for the ACT's defenders. He added a couple of goals respectively, in the 54th and 55th minutes of the match and stretched the lead up to five goals, 8-5.
The strikers from ACT were not ready to give up and continued their efforts. Arin Doig added his second goal of the day and reduced the lead down to four. However, it could not save them from humiliating defeat. Without any further advancement, the Western Australia won the game at 8-4.
