Stellar performances from Steven Smith and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DE-Bollinger-c1348 enabled New South Wales to clinch a 27-run victory over Western Australia in the season opener of the ongoing Ryobi One-Day Cup, played at the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground in Perth
on September 16.
Western Australia won the toss and decided to field first, launching an attack led by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Haddin-c1170 (7 off 32),
and while the latter was dismissed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-Marsh-c1974 in the 12th over after a paltry contribution, Henry drove the first half of the team’s innings.
The 27-run opening stand with Haddin was followed up by a 37-run partnership with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978 did not manage to contribute anything beyond 1 run, but he was followed to the
crease by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SPD-Smith-c2555, who scored an unbeaten 99, in addition to teaming up with Henry for a 65-run stand for the 4th wicket.
By the 36th over, Henry found himself sent back to the pavilion by Johnson, and by this point, NSW had managed to reach 134 for 4. However, Steven Smith found an able partner in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moises-Henriques-c2021 (78), with both batsmen establishing a massive 126-run
stand.
Henriques was sent packing in the 49th over by Coulter-Nile, and accompanied by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harold-William-Stephenson-c61707 O'Keefe (1), Steven Smith guided the team to a final total of 281, at the expense of 5 wickets, by the end of 50 overs.
The Blues followed up their batting performance with a fierce bowling attack, led by Player of the Match Bollinger (13-2-67-4) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joshua-K-Lalor-c69521 (10-1-60-2).
The Warriors’ innings started out with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Voges-c925, who was dismissed
on duck in the 5th over.
Marsh then proceeded to team up with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sam-Whiteman-c88206 (31) for a 52-run partnership for the 3rd wicket, and their combined efforts got the team up to 75 by the 22nd over, after which Marsh was trapped lbw by O'Keefe. Whiteman followed suit
in the 25th over, sent packing by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-North-c1982 (18) and Mitchell Marsh (78).
Their 37-run partnership for the 5th wicket came to an end in the 34th over, with North caught out by Maddinson off Sean http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abbott-c41507, and he was followed back to the pavilion by wicketkeeper batsman Tom Triffitt who was dismissed by Lalor
on duck.
The high point of the innings was the 79-run partnership between Mitchell http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nathan-Rimmington-c2072 (19) chipped in with small contributions, but their efforts
were not enough to save the side, and Western Australia eventually finished all out at 254 – 27 runs short of the target.
