Western Conference play-off opener witnesses Detroit Red Wings winning 4-2 against the Phoenix Coyotes
The Western Conference play-offs kicked off this Wednesday with the Detroit Red Wings playing host to the Phoenix Coyotes at the Joe Louis Arena, and winning the game 4-2 in the end. The game was first of the seven scheduled games of the first round play-off games between the two sides.
The Coyotes were expected to be the struggling team, but surprised everyone by making a great attacking start as soon as the game commenced. The Coyotes scored the opening goal early in the period to get into the lead. The Red Wings also had quite a few chances to score but were unsuccessful in doing so.
The second period started off with the Coyotes making shots sporadically, but it was the Red Wings who showed clear signs of dominance after a few minutes. The Red Wings successfully scored to level the points, and after a continuous attack, managed two more goals to lead at the end. The final period was evenly contested by the two teams, each scoring a goal. In the end it was the Red Wings who won 4-2. Johan Franzen was named the star with a goal and an assist to his credit.
The first period started off with the Coyotes piling on early pressure when they scored in the third minute to gain advantage. The goal was scored by Kyle Turris from a quick fired and well placed shot.
Both teams were provided with a few more chances to score but failed to capitalise, and the period ended with the Coyotes leading 1-0. The Coyotes made 11 shots on goal during the period, while the Red Wings made 9 shots on goal.
The second period began with the Coyotes high on confidence, but it was the Red Wings, who successfully levelled the points as they scored in the eighth minute through Pavel Datsyuk. The Red Wings persisted in their attack and once again scored through Johan Franzen to get ahead in the game.
The Red Wings made a couple of shots on goal and successfully scored once again in the dying stages to extend their lead. The goal was scored by Brian Rafalski from a powerful strike. The period ended with the Red Wings leading 3-1 as they made 17 shots on goal, while the Coyotes made 8 shots on goal.
The final period saw the Red Wings resuming from where they left off, scoring in the fourth minute through Jiri Hudler to seal the game. Though the Coyotes scored through Radim Vrbata from a powerful strike, but it was the Red Wings who won the game 4-2 in the end.
