Western Force’s James O’Connor chooses to be a Rebel - Super Rugby News
James O’Connor, the top class player from the Western Force, has finally decided to be part of the Melbourne Rebels for the next two seasons. He played his last match of the current Super Rugby season for the Force against the Melbourne Rebels yesterday,
June 17, in Melbourne. The Force ended their season with a thrilling victory over the Rebels by 27-24.
The Rebels, who disappointed their fans with a poor performance in their debut season, are delighted with the new addition to their side. The Melbourne Rebels confirmed the news of their new singing on June 18 and said that James O’Connor has made a two-year
deal with the club. The Rebels are exuberant with the achievement as O’Connor was approached by overseas clubs and other Australian Super Rugby derbies.
Melbourne Rebels chief executive, Steve Boland, who was excited to break the news to the media, said that, "James is one of the most promising talents in world rugby and we are delighted that he is joining the Rebels.” He further added, “We don't just want
good rugby players, but also individuals who are willing to challenge themselves. Balance in life is an important part of our club."
O’Connor is one of the great players of the current Wallabies team and Australian Rugby Union is also happy with his decision to stay at home for another two years. The Wallabies coach, Robbie Deans, was extremely happy by his new contract with the Australian
derby.
Responding to O’Connor’s deal with Melbourne Rebels and ARU, Deans expressed his gratitude and said that, “This is great news. It provides certainty, both for James and for Australian Rugby. While James has already made a significant impact in his career
to date, there is a lot more that can be achieved and he is striving for that. The last three years have provided a good base.”
Melbourne Rebels’ newly appointed head coach, Damien Hill, has also appreciated James O’Connor and welcomed him to his team. The coach further said that with O’Connor’s inclusion in the side the Rebels will become a competitive side in the next Super Rugby
season.
