Western Force’s Pekahau Cowan injury rules him out of remainder of Super Rubgy season
Western Force has suffered a major blow as team officials confirmed that prop Pekahau Cowan will not participate in the club’s remaining games of the 2011 super rugby championships, on Sunday May 22. Cowan injured his cheekbone during the Force’s encounter
against Brumbies on Saturday May 21.
Cowan plays the loosehead prop position and underwent surgery earlier today. Cowan was taken off the field during the second minute of the game against the Brumbies on May 21.
Providing details about the surgery, the officials confirmed that the doctor performed the surgery in the morning. Officials further added that there were no associated complications and the doctors performed the operations without any complications.
Commenting on Cowan’s status, officials confirmed that Cowan is in good health and in good spirits. When asked about the recovery time from the injury, officials commented that the doctors have provided an expected four weeks recuperation period for the
player.
The injury would sideline Cowan from the Force’s remaining Super Rugby encounters. Force will depart to New Zealand to play four of their remaining four matches against the Hurricanes and Highlanders.
Force will later return to Australia to host the Australian conference leaders Reds. Force will play their last match of the season against the Rebels in Melbourne. Super Rugby’s new entrants Melbourne Rebels have already defeated the Force during their
earlier encounter.
Wellington born Cowan made his professional senior club debut for the Western Force in the 2006 season. He has made 28 appearances for the Force since 2006. Cowan is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 116 kg and is a renowned front row forward and his exceptional
performance, skills and abilities has earned him a call to the Australian national rugby union team.
Cowan made his international debut for Wallabies against Italy in June 2009. He has so far made four appearances for the Aussies.
Cowan’s injury is the latest blow to the Wallaby front row stock. Earlier Wallaby international hooker Huia Edmonds and tighthead prop Salesi Ma'afu also sustained respective injuries. However, Cowan will recover on time and is likely to be available for
Wallabies in the upcoming Tri-Nations series.
