Western Province thrashes young Blue Bulls during round three encounter of 2011 ABSA Currie Cup
South African Rugby Union (SARU) provincial side, Western Province, has continued their unbeaten streak in the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup tournament as they handed over a thrashing defeat to the
young and relatively inexperienced Blue Bulls side.
Province bonus point victory over the Bulls has placed them at third place at the end of round three of the 2011 Currie Cup tournament. Province defeated Bulls 35 – 7 at Newlands, Cape Town
on Saturday, July 30.
Province was playing at their home ground and in front of an audience of approximately 25,000 fans to start the match strongly. They were first to score the points in the match, courtesy of
their hooker Tiaan Leibenberg’s 5th minute try.  Province fly half Demetri Catrakilis followed with his successful conversion, to put the hosts in lead by seven points.
Province retained the ball possession as they controlled the territory and ensured their dominance over the proceedings.  Province extended their lead courtesy of Catrakilis 17th
minute penalty. Few minutes later, their right-winger Danie Poolman scored their second try of the game in the 19th minute. Catrakilis followed with his conversion to take the scorecard reading 15 – 0.
Bulls’ fly half Francois Brummer missed a penalty in the 22nd minute of the game, as Catrakilis successfully kicked his second penalty of the game to leave the visitors trailing
by 18 points.
With game nearing the end of the first half, Bulls bring their act together as they recovered the ball and retained the ball possession, which helped them to gain territory and create scoring
opportunities.  Bulls scored their first and only try of the match in the 34th minute through their inside centre Stefan Watermeyer. Brummer followed with the conversion to take the scorecard reading 18 – 7.
Catrakilis scored his third penalty in the 37th minute of the first half, to take the scorecard reading 21 – 7, which remain the same at the end of the first half.
Both teams started the second half strongly as both move to seek an early advantage. However, Province proved too much for the young Bulls side, as Province kept them pointless in second half.
Catrakilis missed a penalty in the 53rd minute of the game, as both squads made substitutions to bring fresh legs onto the field. Province’s number eight, Nick Foster, scored the
third try of the match in the 62nd minute of the game to extend their lead to 19 points. Catrakilis followed with his conversion, as Bulls found it difficult to create any sort of scoring move.
Western Province’s scrumhalf, Dewaldt Duvenage, scored their bonus point try in the 73rd minute of the game. Catrakilis followed with his conversion to take the scorecard reading
35 – 7, which remained the same until the end of the second half.
The 28-point margin victory over Bulls is Province’s first bonus point victory of the 2011 Currie Cup tournament.
