Eastern Province won their CSA Provincial Three-Day Competition game against Western Province by ten wickets on Saturday, at Newlands, Cape Town.
The day began with Western Province resuming their second innings from 158 for four. After faltering for 138 in their first innings, it was imperative for the side to put a big score this time in order to overcome Eastern Province’s mammoth score of 386.
GA Edmeades and SA Engelbrecht, who were the last recognized pair in the middle needed to counter the bowlers, however, they could take the score to 183 before the partnership ended on the wicket of Edmeades, who was clean-bowled by Bell after hammering 33 runs.
Wicketkeeper/batsman, BG Barnes, failed to impressive anyone as he faltered after scoring only four runs. At the time of this wicket, Western Province were sitting on 189.
This was a crucial moment in the match, as the batsmen needed to halt the bowling onslaught, while it was imperative for the fielding side to maintain pressure in order to end Western’s innings.
K Schreuder and Engelbrecht then forged another intimidating partnership by launching a blatant attack, taking the score to 214.
This partnership met its demise on the departure of Schreuder, who was caught by Price off Vaaltyn after scoring only eight runs. Nonetheless, his presence helped Engelbrecht smack the bowlers out of town.
However, this wicket also triggered another batting collapse as the side lost another batsman by the time they had amassed 220 runs.
Finally, Engelbrecht, after smashing a flabbergasting innings of 79 became the last wicket to fall, helping his side post 282.
From Easterns, WE Bell was the ace bowler for taking four wickets, while LI Vaaltyn stayed the second best for neutralizing three batsmen.
Requiring just 35 runs to win, Eastern Province cruised to victory with openers DJ White and ML Price hammering 16 runs each.
