Western Provinces head coach Allister Coetzee confident of his sides chances in 2011 Currie Cup
South African Rugby Union’ (SARU) provincial rugby union squad, Western Provinces, head coach Allister Coetzee has expressed confidence that his relatively younger side has the potential to win the 2011 Absa Currie Cup.
Coetzee was commenting on the team and player performances after their impressive Currie Cup encounter against the Griquas at Newlands. Western Provinces, comprising of eight debutant players, managed to play a 26 – 26 draw against the relatively experienced
Griquas side at Newlands Stadium, Cape Town on Saturday, July 16.
Commenting on the output of the youngsters in Saturday’s clash, Coetzee said, “I think there's no shortage of ability and talent and if you look at the stats we've dominated this game - against an experienced side. We dominated territorially and in possession
stats.”
Coetzee expressed his discomfort on missing scoring opportunities by the team during the game. However, he added that he is satisfied with the team’s performance and young teams make such mistakes as this the part of their learning and development.
Coetzee further added, “It's not nice to draw, especially not at home, but having said that I think it's a good start for us. We've just got to be patient, to draw against an experienced Griquas side; there are a lot of positives.”
Coetzee has expressed his confidence that his team has the potential to develop into a Currie Cup winning outfit. He said, “Yes, we can develop these guys into a Currie Cup-winning side, without a doubt.”
Allister Coetzee has termed the Currie Cup as a perfect platform for young and inexperienced players to develop their skills and games that eventually will help them to perform at the Super Rugby and international level.
Stormers and Western Provinces head coach Coetzee has stressed the need on improving the team’s defense and their line out winning ratios. He has expressed his displeasure on the fact that the team has conceded tries from the 60 metres and 80 metres.
In replying to a question about the BabyBoks flanker Siya Kolisi, Coetzee replied, “He's a very talented player, a good prospect - like all the youngsters we saw in the Super 15.”
Coetzee has termed the game as a good learning opportunity and the outcome of the game will help the side to build their skills and game plan in the remaining 14 matches of the domestic competition.
