ok so I showed my mare in halter and we got 2nd place! does that mean that she has decent conformation????? and she's all underweight right now (you can see her ribs.... I bought her that way and she's a really hard keeper but shes gaining weight slowly)

and if I get her to gain enough weight so that you cant see her ribs could that boost us up to possibly 1st place for future shows?

  1. If she got second place while being underweight, the judge must have seen something in her. That being the case, I believe that she definately stands a chance of winning once she puts the weight back on.

  2. Maybe, I hope so.

  3. go to the library and study up on the questions you are asking.it should be very helpful to you.i also love horeses.good luck.

  4. Speaking as experience from being a halter judge, we tend to prefer the horse have a little extra weight on them, not to fat to the point where the bottom line has the "grass belly" look. But we like to see a horse, especially mares, have a little extra jiggle in their hind quarters.

Chances are that you got second because your horse had more of the typing that the judge was looking for. Such as a very feminine look. The other horses below you probably did not possess any or all of these attributes and the 1st place horse was most likely better in conformation and had the look that the judge was looking for.

For halter horses I always suggest to halter contestants that they use either Amplify or Focus WT. Add in some corn oil and an egg and your horse will start putting on healthy weight. Be sure to not work your horse out to much to the point her muscles are like a body builder because most judges like to see a very feminine appeal in the mare classes. They look more for the broodmare types, with a great head and conformation. Traits they'd want passed down to further generations. They don't want an over worked mare that looks more like a stallion on steroids.

  5. Hey, Glad to hear everything all good with your girl.....Do you have a pic??? Condition and presentation play a huge part along with conformation. It would help If I knew if it was a open show or Breed class and how many were in the class, was it your Paint mare?

  6. To win 1st, the horse has to be in great condition. If she looks unhealthy, then you'll get marked down.

  7. Halter classes are typically judged on conformation, breed typiness, and gender typiness.  Your horse must have met these criteria to place well.  By adding weight, not just fat but good muscle, you may very well be able to get a blue!!  Always remember that a show only gives you one persons opinion on one day, so a different judge may not see the same good qualities that the first judge did, or might see more!!  Basically, a horse in healthy weight will always be better than a thin one, so if she doesn't place as well at your next show in better flesh, do not take it to mean she should be thinner.  It is just one persons opinion.

  8. well first u need to find out her weight then you need to add 10 puonds but keep her working hard and that should get u 1st plase. GOOD LUCK!!!

  9. Congratulations on your second place.

Obviously she's looking good to get that so the extra weight could be just what you need to make the difference.

  10. I can tell you in my halter horse world the judges like the "corners" of a horse "rounded" off. In other words, they'd rather not see a lot of angles on a halter horse.  You'll do better to get some additional weight on your horse...continue to do it slowly..you'll get there.  Another thing you should be mindful of is that if you're riding your horse the saddle will act like a "sweat" around your horses' withers...just like a neck sweat that we use to sweat necks down.  That may further delay the weight gain that's needed around the withers area.

Just continue to try to put additional weight on your mare...it will add show "bloom" to her profile and the judges may be inclined to place your first instead of second...although there isn't shame in a second place ribbonl!!!

  11. She sounds like a great horse and 2nd place is something to be proud of.  There are several things that could help you get to first place.  Getting that extra weight on will help, as will conditioning.  Presentation is a big part of how well a horse will place.  At each show you may have different competition, and your horse will be gaining experience and so will you.  Looks like you are on your way to a successful show season!  Congradulations.

  12. well its hard for me to say is she has good conformation if i don't have a picture in front of me.. but i assume that she does if shes scoring so well. though i do encourage adding some lbs to her... you must keep her in shape. but other then that.. you should have a good chance. have fun with your horse!
