I'm a western rider right now but in the summer they have an english camp that sounds fun. Should I focus on one disipline or try two?

  1. You should always try to broaden your riding experiences. At least try English and it will for sure make you a better Western rider. English requires alot of discipline and will make you a better and more rounded rider if you do both styles. If you dont like it then you can at least say you have tried it.

  2. Try english I've done it and learned lots but came back to western.

  3. You should try 2. who knows you could be better at english than u are western.

i used to ride only western. then i whatch an english show and i wanted to try it. I LOVED IT!

when you get a higher discipline you could even try jumping. but i woulden't jump until you get lessons and know how too...

    good luck! :-)

  4. Sure! It's always a lot of fun to try out something new- I ride English usually, but when I went to 4-H camp they had us do a barrel course and try goat tying.... The more stuff you try the more fun horseback riding is!

Go for it- you'll learn something new and you can see if you like riding English! Have fun!

  5. i think the more yo know the better it is. this way you can talk to all kinds of horsepeople and keep a conversation going. it almost like knowing two languages. so i think that you should definetly do the riding camp. it cant hurt anything can it? you never know you may grow to like english..but it never hurts to try good luck

  6. I only do english, so I dont know of western, but (Especially if you go into eventing) I think the discepline are very different. When I see, for instance, a western pleasure class, the horses really dont seem to have much contact or a short rein. In Dressage they are expected to move into the contact, have a steady contact, shorter rein (Although not always) and i think english is pickier on the riders' position. Also, because the two types of riding expect different things, a horse that is good in one will prolly not be good in the other, as it will prolly contradict his training in the other.

I would say go for the camp cause it prolly wont be anything high level so you should be able to do fine. Besides, It;s a good sampler. I would say that you could do both for now in the lower levels of english and do ok but there would be a certain point that you would have to choose one or the other.

  7. The more you know the better! Knowing both disciplines will make you a well rounded rider and better informed in your own discipline!

  8. i did camp in june and i rode western. that was my first time riding. after that camp i started taking weekly lessons and my instructor changed me to english the first privite lesson.i am enjoying english more than western but it all depends on your trust.

  9. It's always a great idea to broaden your horizon. Learning how to ride English will only improve your knowledge of western and your like (or maybe you'll fall in love with English like I did!) for western and riding in general. Go for the camp, it's always a great idea because English focus's on some great ideas that help improve western riding. I began as a western rider then found my way into dressage and jumping. I'm mostly a dressage rider but jumping always helps for various little position improvements, surprisingly enough. It's great to focus on one sport, but you should always dabble a bit!

  10. definately try both!

  11. Do both you get more experienced

  12. Try two, I have grown up doing western all my life, in order to better myself im going to be learning english myself here when i get back to Arizona You can never know to much and you should never stop learning..

  13. I started out in westen and than I got into english, I love english so much more and everyone I got started in english loves it too. You should try new things, if you try it you may like it!

  14. I would definantly say go for it. It's alot of fun being able to ride more then one disipline. It gets you thinking more to when you ride both english and western because they are so much different from each other.

    Good Luck

  15. Go for it. I ride english but prefer western.

  16. I am focusing on 6.

Both feed into each other. You may learn one thing in english that you can use in western.

  17. lol the fight will forever go on...english vs. western :)

personally i LOVE english if you can ride english you can ride western. I would take the english camp, if you like it stay with it. if you like western better take western :) if you like both...well if there isn't a money inconveniance(sp?) take both xD

    good luck (:

  18. Try it,- you might love it or you might hate it but until you try it you will never know.

  19. NEVER limit yourself.  DO IT ALL!!!

  20. You can try another one then you can decide for yourself what is best for you.  Unless you are going to compete  at a high lever I don't think there is any reason not to learn and enjoy both disiplines
