As Weston has been in the news lately I was wondering why Weston-Super-Mare is called Super?

  1. because in Latin "super" means on top of and "mare" means sea ... so Weston-super-Mare means Weston on sea ... better be "super" than "sub" which means under as in submarine (under the sea)
