Westwood, Donald and Molinari are favourites to win the Open, says Olazabal
Jose Maria Olazabal, Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain, has tipped Donald, Westwood and Molinari to win the Open. Olazabal was asked to name the players who he thinks are favourites to win the Open Championship.
The Open will take place at Royal Lytham, teeing off on 19th July.
The choices from Olazabal are not surprising though. Donald and Westwood are currently world number one and three respectively, where as Francesco Molinari has been in sublime form recently. Molinari is currently leading at the Scottish Open and looks to
be in very good nick.
Among the three, Olazabal thinks that it is Lee Westwood, the Englishman, who has the best chance at this year’s Open.
Lytham is basically a links course which requires very good control on the ball and Lee is currently among the best players who have firm control over their balls.
This course also favours those who are very good drivers and Lee’s driving is currently the best one, his putting is just a touch weak but he can compensate it with his huge drives.
Luke Donald, the world number one golfer, has not won a major yet. This could be his best chance but will the expectations of Britain get to him? Does not look like it. If you are number one, then that means you have all the necessary skills needed to do
well in any tournament.
Luke missed the cut at the US Open but back then he was having trouble with his swing. However, his swing has fixed and he is more eager than ever to win the Open.
"I felt very comfortable on the tee." he said. "More comfortable than for a long time. My swing was out of kilter at the US Open but now it is getting very close to where I want it to be and I am really excited about it. All the hard work I have put in up
here is starting to pay off".
Olazabal’s confidence in Molinari is pretty much understandable. The Italian is currently leading few of the best golfers in the world at Scottish Open and at the moment he is probably playing the best golf on the tour.
Tiredness might be a factor for Molinari but when one is playing at the Open, he has to overcome such things.
