Westwood's calf injury resurfaces
Earlier this week Lee Westwood was very nearly on top of the world, having played a significant part in reclaiming the Ryder Cup for Europe while reaching a new high of world No. 2.
But Westwood now fears he may have to quit this week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, after the calf injury that had ruled him out for six weeks recurred in Scotland earlier today.
Having shot two-under-par 70 at the Kingsbarns course earlier today, now the 37-year-old has admitted he may have pushed himself too hard since his comeback. Westwood certainly has something to play for this week; if he can win or finish as a runner up, he will topple Tiger Woods from the world No. 1 spot. Yet the Englishman is now doubtful as to whether he can even finish the tournament.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Westwood admitted: "I just think I'm doing too much basically. Last week was very hard and I think two weeks in a row is probably too much in hindsight.
"I should have just played the Ryder Cup and then gone back to rehab."
And asked on the likelihood of returning to play on Friday, Westwood was still undecided: "I don't know, I'll go and get some treatment on it and ice it and see how it is. But I don't want it to get back to where it was. We'll see how things go overnight."
Westwood revealed earlier this week that he planned to play exclusively on the European Tour in 2011, eschewing the riches of the PGA Tour.
