Westy ready to wipe away a major in 2011
Lee Westwood has new goals in mind after finishing the season successfullty as world number one. The veteran is eyeing to post a victory in a major.
2010 has been extraordinary for the Englishman. The 34-year-old was part of the victorious Ryder Cup team and later dethroned Tiger Woods. Moreover, he finished second in the Masters and Open Championship. This
left him with one missing loop and that was a victory, which he seized in South Africa at the stage of NedBank Golf Challenge.
As a New Year resolution, the world number one is determined to win a title in the majors. This is what he said to the press on Monday, when he was about to abode the plane to England. Westy said, "It's obviously my number one
target now because I've never won one. I have come very close over the last couple of years but careers are defined by major championships, so I would obviously like to win a major championship. I try to focus on it, but without trying to put too much pressure
on myself."
Westy came very close to a victory, but let it slip out of his hands. In 2008, he finished third in the US Open and with a gap of twelve months; he seized a share in the top three at the Open and PGA Championship. Getting closer
to his goal, Westy finished next to Phil Mickelson in ‘The Masters’ and second to Louis Oosthuizen in ‘The Open Championship’.
The player is determined and confident about fulfilling his next goal. According to Westy, the confidence has been provided by his title, which tagged him as the richest and most successful golfer of the year.
37-year-old added, "There's no doubt about it, being number one gives you a massive boost of confidence. To look at the world rankings and then to turn up at a tournament and know that as far as the world rankings are concerned,
there's nobody better there at the tournament. If you play your best, you should certainly contend that week, if not win it. It is still something I am trying to come to terms with. There is expectation whenever you turn up at tournaments and you have to fulfil
that, but since I have become number one, I have finished second, third and first. So I think I can cope with it."
The confidence, which Westwood mentioned in his conversation, was seen in his performance at the Gary Player Golf Club in Sun City, where the NedBank Challenge took place. The veteran smashed an eight-stroke lead in the face of
Tim Clark. His closest competitor was the South African, who had the advantage of home ground. Meanwhile, Padraig Harrington, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Retief Goosen, and Ernie Els all failed to came close to the veteran.
The Englishman seized a massive winning prize of $1.25 million, which helped him retain his number one rank until the next year. The player seized his debut victory over a field of twelve professionals.
The 12 player tournament comes every year to Sun City to celebrate golf. The event carrying a purse of $ 5 million, hits the magnificent course of South Africa in December. The tournament, which is co-sanctioned by Sunshine and
the European Tour, is the third last event of the season.
So Lee Westwood is looking for a major title after seizing his debut win of the season. The player is confident that he will achieve his target, since hard work and dedication makes everything possible. With the world number one
rank, Ryder Cup victory, and a victory on the Sunshine Tour, Westy is heading towards yet another successful year.
