Wet Nurses - where can I find one in the UK?

Anyone know where one would find wet nurses - a business or individual who would breastfeed other people's babies? It's an ancient tradition but very uncommon these days as far as I know.

  1. i think that people these days would rather use formula then risk the baby getting a disease from the wet nurse.

    they do have breastmilk banks.

i wonder how much they get paid?

  2. u cant, why would you want to?      I found out not long ago that AIDS can be passed thru breast milk

  3. I would start by asking a mid wife where you can find one.

Mizz - they get tested, stupid.

  4. While I'm sure there are private wetnursing arrangements, there are no organizations out there that link up nurses with clients.

The closest thing in modern society are milk-banks.

  5. Get your husband to do it

  6. Not many here either. My suggestion is to contact a La Leche League group (I believe they have them in Britain) to find out if the leader(s) know of anybody whom you can contact.

Mostly what happens locally is that several moms will provide extra, frozen breastmilk for a child in need (often with a medical problem).  A wet nurse would KEEP your baby until weaned and that is hardly palatable to most moms today.

FYI to other posters, most of the donating moms have recent bloodwork.  They aren't likely going to attempt to infect their own child, much less someone elses.

  7. why wud u do that when you can baby milk? or simply the babys mother feeds it like its supposed to be!

isnt it dangerous someone else feeding your baby? the baby could catch somthing

  8. La leche is the best option. Nobody uses wetnurses anymore, that's what formula and avent baby bottles are for.
