Wet Turkish Grand Prix FP1 session over, Fernando Alonso tops, Sebastian Vettel crashed – Formula 1
The first Free Practice session of the Turkish Grand Prix is done and dusted in Istanbul in rainy conditions, today, May 6th.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was able to top the times sheet with the fastest time of 1 minute and 38.670 seconds.
The session was mainly interrupted by rain since from the beginning till the end of the run, heavy showers induced the wet Pirelli tyres, used by every team.
In the first half an hour of the session, only two drivers were on the track while others were hoping the rain to stop so that they can do a simulation lap for wet conditions.
After that, the drivers came out on intermediate Pirelli tyres and bagged some mileage.
Alonso completed 13 laps in the entire 90 minute session while his teammate, Felipe Massa, ended in seventh position and completed 14 laps, including a fastest lap time of 1 minute and 40.697 seconds.
Mercedes’ duo, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, finished second and third, respectively, in the final standings, managing 32 laps in total.
Renault’s duo, Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov, landed fourth and fifth, respectively, with descents times in the wet conditions.
Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi finished sixth with the fastest time of 1 minute and 40.421 seconds. The Japanese driver completed 16 laps while his rookie teammate, Sergio Perez, was way back on the time sheet at the 22nd position with almost 20 seconds
off pace than Alonso.
Toro Rosso tested Daniel Ricciardo who did a good job in STR6 and finished eighth on the table. His team-mate, Sebastien Buemi, finished right behind him in ninth place.
The highlight of the day was the crash of the defending champion, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
Vettel waited for his turn to make his way on the track but soon in the first lap, he crashed his RB7 on the famous turn eighth of the Turkish track.
The second Free Practice session continues in Turkey and teams will hope that the rain stops before the session starts so that some simulations laps can be done.
