Question:

Wet food question for my cat?

I now switched to wet food for my 18 year old. He loves it and eats it all up as soon as I put it down. I have a problem because I am so used to leaving and feeling safe with the dry food there for him to eat all day. What do I do about leaving him and feeding him? How often do I feed him? How can I leave all day without feeding him? Any good brand suggestions too?

  1. If your cat demands wet food, and some do, I give my cats their wet food at night right before we go to bed. That gives us a couple of hours to get to sleep while the cats digest and clean up after their meal.

Friskies wet canned food is good.

  2. My cat is older too, and prefers wet food over dry food. We leave both out for her. My cat (Velcro) likes a little bit of food at a time, so we'll have a can for a day or two. She'll bug whenever she's hungry, and most of the time somebody will feed her. I'll come home from work and she'll bug me, I'll feed her, then an hour later my mom will come home and Velcro bugs her as well. Or vice versa. But I usually don't feed her AGAIN. And in this case, she'll go to dry food. She obviously eats the dry food as well when nobody's home.

As for good brands, I'm not too sure on this one. Velcro only eats a certain kind of food. 9 Lives for wet and Friskies for dry. Then again, she also eats Ben and Jerry's Creme Brulee ice cream :P Oh, and ketchup, and vegetarian chiken.

  3. Dry food has little to no nutritional value for cats. It is convenient for people and we feel better knowing we can leave it out all day. Your kitty will be fine with eating in the morning and in the evening. Cats have to go through a normal digestive process and leaving out food all day inhibits this.

Glad you made the switch to wet food. I recommend a raw diet- it is healthiest . Google is and see.

When  my kitty gets picky, I give a teaspoon of Firskies tuna in sauce mixed with his raw food Oma's Pride.  Don't do food with gravy, it is unhealthy and can make kitties fat.

    He is so healthy.

  4. well, first thing, you want to know how often to feed him. three times a day should be sufficient. also know that canned food for an older cat is good for their teeth, but can often lead to digestive problems, to begin with. and leaving him should be fine, but just make sure to leave him water. he can go without food for a while. fancy feast is a good brand and friskies. also, you might try to put half of the can in his normal eating place, and place the other half in another part of your home, so that if he does get hungry while you are gone, then he might find it later on. hope this helps.

  5. If you can feed him three times a day that would be ideal but as long as he is getting fed twice a day he should be fine.  For and old kitty like yours I would recommend a high quality wet food.  Remember when it comes to pet food price does matter!  Royal Canin is a good brand as is Science Diet Prescription Diet.  Call your vet and see what diet they would recommend for you.  Many brands carry senior cat foods that are taliored to be easy on old kitty stomachs, kidneys etc.  Also, depending on the brand you buy, many have feeding charts to help decide how much your cat should get in a day.

    Edit:

It is easier on old kitty systems to stick with one brand :)

  6. wet food is the best for senior cats since they have sensitive teeth & gums

maybe find a semi-soft food like tender vittles that you could leave out if you are gone a long time

  7. Try some Whiskas,it comes in pouches and dry,my baby loves it! There is also Fancy Feast,it's just a little can but plenty for 1 meal.Just put out the dry and the wert before you leave in the morning so he will have both to choose from,Bon Appetit,Kitty!
