Rocky was good but nowhere near the greatest he did not have a very strong level of competition in his era. Rocky Marciano was undefeated because he fought bums and aging former champions. There was no serious competition in his except those provided by two aging boxers Jersey Joe Walcott and Archie Moore, who both knocked down Marciano before eventually losing the fight. Rocky never fought Joe Louis in his prime (he KO'd an old, and desperate for cash Louis who was nowhere close to the boxer he used to be), or someone like Ali, Liston, Foreman or Frazier. Also, Marciano was a small heavyweight, about 5'10, with a short reach and and soft skin. He was slow and easily got hit and cut. His skills were primitive at best and simply relied on his chin and brutal punches to overpower his opponents, after all mayweather is also undefeated right now but that does not mean that he is the greatest welter weight of all time.

  1. i think most people if asked wouldnt say he was the greatest heavyweight ever, that goes to ali for most, but rocky did beat everyone he fought and thats a great achivement, ok they were not the best crop of heavys but he always found a way to win coming back from knockdowns and terrible cuts. rocky today would only be a cruiserweight so it could really be a p4p debate. for me people who could jab and move, ali, holmes would beat him and even make it look easy, but with modern training , diets etc, together with his punch, heart and chin he would give most a tough tough fight, fightts with holyfield and tyson would be classics, and i see him knocking out lewis. to the guy who says frazier beats rocky and thats a simple fact is crazy, frazier went down a few times and which great heavyweights did frazier beat ??? ali who was 3 years out the ring and it was still very close. rocky had power in both hands frazier was all left hook, rocky had the better chin both had heart frazier was quicker, pretty even fight by no means a FACT

  2. Rocky didnt box, he brawled. People like him for that reason alone. Sugar Ray Robinson is indeed the greatest pound for pound "boxer" ever.

  3. It's the same "wow factor" that made people certain that Ricky Hatton would defeat Mayweather, Tyson would beat Holyfield, Foreman over Ali.  It obscures the rational brain, and all the fan can think about is punching power.

  4. Rocky was not the greatest like you said he did not have a very strong level of competition in his era...., Sugar Ray Robisnon is the greatest pound for pound boxing champion of all time, he has more victories than the careers of many boxers combined, his skills and strenght were only surpassed by his heart and his chin was made of steel, if God ever decided to make the ultimate boxer it would have probably have been Sugar RayRobinson, and he fought a very high level of competition in his era, even muhammed Ali said that he considers sugar ray robinson the greatest of all time (pound for pound), the greatest heavy weight was Ali, he fought during the golden era of boxing against the best boxers that ever lived and beat them all, that alone gives him the right to be considered the best.......Rocky marciano would have never survived 12 rounds in the ring with George Foreman or joe Frazier this is just a simple fact and although his undefeated record is remarkable that is not enough reason to consider him the greatest

  5. i don't know, good question.

  6. People still hold him up because of this record 49-0, and he was a white/italian guy; which combination describes a huge number of boxing fans/writers (which is why if Chavez had retired at 86-0 or however many he had won straight, I'm not sure he would have occupied the same tier as Rocky does among old-school boxing guys).

Anyone who actually watches boxing would not have to think twice about whether Rocky Marciano's abilites would have translated to any era past his own - but he was very heavy-handed, and you have to love a guy who hits hard, has a lot of guts and determination and makes it equate to an undefeated record.

  7. Probably most of the middleweights would beat him today - but he did beat all comers in his era

  8. there are lots of different list that compare boxers of different eras and lots of them say different things. some say that Joe Louis was the best some say it was Ali who was the best some who will say Tyson was the best, some who will say Jack Dempsey was the best and etc, etc, etc.

As far as I'm concerned there is no absolute best boxer ever in history. you can only say someone is the best during a certain time period b/c in the end he will always change as time goes on
