  1. It has a different cell structure because it is not a true alga.

    The term “blue green algae” is a misnomer and is not used much in scientific circles. It is called “cyanobacteria” or just blue-greens.

    Although not true algae, cyanobacteria are thought to have evolved into the eukaryotic algae of today. Performing oxygenic photosynthesis, it is a very old prokaryotic organism dating from about 2.8 billion years ago.
