Wha happens to the plastic food trays on airplanes once people have eaten?

The hostess takes them back down the back but what happens to them?

they reuse them for the next people on the plane...it called recycle trays...nasty huh.....this is what you be paying for...

They get loaded back onto the trolley and the trolley is stowed away. Once the plane reaches its destination, the trolleys are unloaded onto a truck, and taken to a kitchen/food prep area where they are emptied. The trays are washed on a large dish-washing machine and then dried. They can then be used again.
