  1. The Secretary General of the United Nations serves one term which lasts five years.

The candidates are recommended by the Security Council and the General Assembly appoint the Secretary General. Therefore a permanent member of the security council can veto the recommendation. The post is NOT ELECTED.

Most Secretary Generals are reappointed for a second term so usually serve ten years.

If a nation has a permanent seat on the Security Council, none of their citizens can be the Secretary General. So if you are a citizen of the US, the UK, France, Russia or China you have no chance.

Kofi Annan's two terms lasted ten years. It started on the 1st of January 1997 and ended on the 31st of December 2006.

The Secretary General does not leave office until the final day of the final year.

So it may appear that Kofi Annan served 9 years but he served 10.

He left office at the end of 2006 and not at the start of 2006.

  2. Four years, like the American President.
